So many of our cultural touchstones revolve around Italy. Christopher Columbus, Venetian gondoliers, the Sistene chapel and Leonardo DaVinci; Italy has given us so many wonderful experiences and memories. And that’s before talking about Italian food and wine! From straw-flasks that turned into great candle holders and “Riunite on ice…it’s nice!” through today’s sought after Super-Tuscans, Pinot Grigios and wines from all over the boot; the sheer variety in Italian wine is unmatched. But one stands above all for us in America…Chianti. That magical area between Florence and Siena where the rolling hills and winding roads unfurl their charms slowly and life moves to the rhythm of the earth, unhitched from any clock. Far removed from those old straw flasks, modern Chianti is a food-friendly red with riper flavors than ever imagined in earlier years. Gran Ducale is a great example of the current style of Chianti. Medium-bodied, smooth and eminently drinkable, it’s versatile with a wide range of foods (yes, including pizza and pasta!) and a super value at under $10. As the Italians say, “Cin-cin!”
